Embedding Happens In Your Favorite T.V. Show

Have you ever noticed while watching T.V. on props such as a carton of milk will either have A) a real logo, B) a fake brand, or C) a blur over the logo? Such as Zoey 101, a T.V. show played on Disney channel, all the laptop’s symbols are pears. Similar to what the apple logo looks like on a Macintosh computer. Some T.V. shows will have real logos, like a can of coco-cola, as compared to others (commonly in reality shows) where a brand is blurred out. If a producer has decided not to show case any logo’s that is easily replaced with fake logos. Whereas if a producer decided to incorporate logos there are factors they must think about; such as, how much money is that company willing to pay, and whether or not the logo even suits the image of the film. Whether or not the logo fits the image is an opinion, but the money is based on good decisions. Prices range from pocket change to 50 million dollars. Prices depend on the film. If the film seems trustworthy to become popular maybe a couple million dollars would be offered. But say a sequel, for example Harry Potter, could be paid multi millions for product exposure. Or sometimes the logo is just simply there and shown for free in the James Bond films, car companies Ford and Aston Martin reportedly paid 50 million dollars to give their cars good exposure. This money was paid due to the films popularity. Lastly the pear case! Where did those pears in Zoey 101 come from? Well supposedly, this logo is a parody from Apple Inc. This pear logo is also showcased in other popular television shows such as ICarly, Danny Phantom, and The Fairly Odd Parents. Fun Fact. Also in Sex And The City there is a scene where one of the characters is holding a New York Times magazine. An employee of that magazine noticed, while watching the movie and states in a blog of her own, “…walked all the way across the office, and cornered New York's communications director, Serena Torrey.”Did we pay to be in Sex and the City?" we demanded.” (‘Sex and the City’ Causes Us to Investigate Product Placement, Ourselves: nymag.com) The answer to her question is no. The producer in this situation was just generous and felt that the logo fit, and that’s the image he wanted and did not bother to make money off of it (although he made millions off of it regardless).

Women < Men

Sexism is the discrimination against a certain gender or sexual preference. One of the most common ways sexism is displayed in the media is through degrading women and marginalizing their rights, and the glass ceiling effect. The glass ceiling is the metaphorical barrier between men and women in corporations and other organizations. The glass ceiling is defined as an invisible limitation that doesn’t allow women to ever be as high up in corporations as men. In the media they use advertisements, TV and other media devices to display the glass ceiling effect. A statics I found on the internet said that at the current rate of increase, it will take 475 years (until 2466) before women are as equally represented at the top of the career ladder as they are at the bottom, This might not seem like it has much to do with media but it does; If the media was to promote women’s rights and stop all sexism shown in TV and advertisements this static would drop drastically and would probably take less than half the time. I think to make the media realize this is wrong we need to first stop it in society and show them that it is not acceptable.  With all this being said It is not only men and the media that is at fault for this, it is women too, women need to stand up for themselves to make a change.  There is no reason men are better than women and there is no reason women are better than men. We are all people. We are all equal.

Mash-Ups

My personal definition of a mash-up is a song created through the use of other artist’s songs. I think mash-ups are a new form of music that is becoming more and more popular throughout our generation. In today’s world it’s hard to come up with new music that still entertains the youth and is completely new. In all realty no song is truly unique if you take out the words and listen to the beat you can find a song that has a beat very similar so what’s the difference? At least the artist making mash-ups are showing the audience where they got it from and not pretend they made it. In my opinion mash-ups are fun and entertaining and should be legal as long as the artist creating the mash-up is giving credit where credit is due. I think most of the people who are against mash-ups are just looking strictly at the fame and money that can come from creating them, which shouldn’t be important.  Music should be about the music and trying to portray a certain image or feeling to the listener, it should be about the actual music itself; not about the money.
This is a Mash-Up of some songs I like that were mashed into one to create one new song...

Homosexuality displayed in the media

What do you picture when you picture a gay guy? Many will say flamboyant, outgoing, well dressed, nice hair etc. Now tell me what you think of when you think of a lesbian girl? Tough, strong willed tom boy, frumpy clothing, short hair etc. These are the stereotypes for homosexual people, which are displayed way too often in the media. One of the only times when a homosexual in the media isn't shown like this, is when they're making a joke out of the stereotypes. In all reality when you walk down a street in somewhere like Toronto you will pass a homosexual that most likely doesn't follow the stereotypes. I think the media should display homosexuals without these stereotypes. They should be displayed like everyone else. I think that would stop a lot of the homophobic behaviour in today’s world. Look at this picture; now tell me can you tell which is gay. No you can't, the outside image of someone doesn't prove anything.

Practice Safe Breath

Commercials are good ways of showing off a product, getting across a message or showing a trailer for a show or movie. Now adays the commercials are starting to come across more sexual and that gives the audience a different message. For example the commercial for dentene ice gum. The slogan is practice safe breath. They have a bunch of situations where a guy and a girl would be about to "hook up" and they would need the dentene ice gum for safety, but the hidden message is actually practice safe sex so the guy would be getting a condom instead of gum making it the commercial more sexual. Another way commercials are coming across with the wrong message is when you see a commercial for axe or other colognes you have women in hardly any clothes on. They also show you that by wearing that cologne you can get any lady you want and women will just through themselves at you. I think this is wrong and marketers should start coming up with different tactics then sexually commercials to grab your attention. Our society can be a lot more creative then to come up with someone to put women down and to make everything have a hidden message about sex or how it is easy to get a girl if you wear a certain cologne.

Stereotypes

o         Stereotypes today are becoming a normal and more obvious thing. In a school setting most teenagers judge and chose who they hang out with according to what they look like and what sports or different things they are into. “Stereotype means a simply standardized conception or image invested with special meaning and held in common members of a group.” Stereotyping teaches people to judge, place, and arrange people in different groups. Stereotypes can be negative or positive and can be based on such things like nationalities, sports, ethnic backgrounds, and beliefs.  Some examples of stereotypes are nerds, jocks, hipsters, band geeks and the popular crowd. In my opinion people should stop judging others based on stereotypes made by society before meeting someone and they should get to know them before judging. But saying that doesn't mean it’s going to happen; No one as an individual can stop stereotypes the only thing we can do is lead by example and hope others follow to turn our society into a place free of stereotypes where people are accepted for who they are.

"Perfect"

o                                                        In today’s world girls are shown brutally in media. To be in most fashion magazines you have to have what’s called the perfect body, being too skinny for your own good, which isn’t setting a good or healthy example for the young girls of our society. Now starting from such a young age girls are very unsure and self-conscious about their bodies and they think they need to be “perfect”. By telling our young girls that their body should be a certain way our society has caused eating disorders to increase rapidly over that past years. Statistics show that up to 20% of people with eating disorders will die and today eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of all mental illnesses. In my opinion we need to set a positive role model for the young girls of today’s world; we should teach them that looks aren’t the most important thing and you don’t need to be “stick” skinny, you just need to be healthy. We should stop photo-shopping the pictures in magazines and we should start using women and girls of all different body types to show them that there isn’t just one perfect body type.
